THE FLAME TREE ESTATE & HOTEL REVIEW:

Whilst we didn’t think the city of Kandy was worth the hype, this hotel is a destination in and of itself. Let us tell you why.

The Flame Tree is a stunningly refurbished estate that retains all of its old world charm whilst ensuring it provides the modern comforts we would expect from a hotel of this calibre. The hotel has been restored to its former glory by its truly fabulous owner, David, with artwork, sculpture and books to be found in every corner. Our room (Mindful Mongoose) was extremely comfortable, beautifully decorated and sparkling clean.

The food offerings at The Flame Tree are very good overall - with The Sri Lankan breakfast being the star of the show.

Located around 40 minutes from Kandy, this hotel serves as a refuge from the chaos of the city. There are so many ways you can enjoy this little paradise - whether it’s lounging by the pool throughout the day, reading a book in the library or watching the sun set across the jungle canopy, the Flame Tree is where you need to be.

Top Tip: We recommend no more than one full day visiting the town of Kandy. Simply sit back and relax at The Flame Tree for the remainder of your time

Date of our stay: December 2025
