Hotels, in our opinion, should transport the guest into a different world, even just for a fleeting moment. They should have distinctive character and design, the service should be ten steps ahead at all times and the bed should be out of this world comfortable. It’s not often that we experience all of these things at once, but let us tell you, it is truly a glorious moment when we do. Stepping into The Standard in Bangkok was one of those moments. Conceptualized by Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon, the interior design is a riot of color, texture and pattern, inspired by the dynamism and wild energy of the city. Common areas are truly maximalist in nature, taking inspiration from the diverse cultural heritage of the capital city, alongside nods to its rich arts scene. Bedrooms are calming and yet still retain that element of playfulness that dominates this hotel. Maybe it was because of the 22 hour journey from New York, but the bed was one of the comfiest we have ever slept in and the shower - put it this way, we never knew a rain shower could be so damn good. As with all Thai service, nothing was too much and everything was taken care of. The ‘all you can eat’ style breakfast included a variety of both Thai and Western dishes - all equally as delicious (the Thai Iced Tea was a particular revelation). The only issue we had with this hotel is the location - yes, this hotel is located in possibly the most hyped up building in Bangkok (the King Power Mahanakhon), however in our opinion being in the CBD is not the sexiest of locations and it is not walkable to city’s most happening spots.
Top Tip: Beat the jetlag and indulge in one of the many street food tours to get a genuine taste of Thailand.
