OK we won’t lie to you - a safari trip in Tanzania is not cheap. It’s also not for the faint hearted. That said, if you happen to be in the market for an adventurous vacation that’s also not going to set you back millions of dollars per night, Wayo Serengeti Green Camp is a pretty damn good choice. We visited in late October (the end of the dry season in the Northern Serengeti), and from the moment we arrived, the staff set the tone for an unforgettable stay - incredibly warm, friendly and genuinely excited to make our stay special. The guides were next-level talented - shout out to Zacky, our intrepid guide who navigated us to some breathtaking wildlife encounters. Meals at the camp were all homemade and comforting (everything is all inclusive on safari) - simple, hearty and perfect after a day bouncing around the plains. The tents were also surprisingly comfortable (the beds in particular), though the nighttime soundtrack (ie. hyenas and lions…!!!) takes some getting used to. The bathroom setup was truthfully the trickiest part - flushing toilet, yes, but no running water, which meant sinks and showers needed constant topping up. It works, but it’s not the most practical or comfortable. The location was also a mixed bag for us. It’s a beautiful, wild part of the Serengeti and we could often go for hours without seeing another (human) soul, but we were about 1.5 hours from the Kogatende/ Mara river areas, where most of the wildlife action was. It may have been the late-season timing, but it did mean more time on the road. Nevertheless, this is a very special place - the scenery, the wildlife, the people, the feeling of being fully immersed in nature (we didn’t even *think* about Instagram all week) - it all added up to a magical Serengeti experience we will never forget.
Top Tip: If you are you planning a safari trip, we highly recommend booking with a help of travel agents specializing in safaries. We booked ours with Yellow Zebra Safaris.
